Individual Health Plans

There are four companies currently writing individual health insurance in Kentucky. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Fortis and John Alden. In order to quote health insurance, we will need information as to type of coverage (single, couple, single w/ children, or family) and dates of birth of each. At that time, we will obtain quotes for you from the above companies and send the information to you for review.

Short Term Medical

No one plans to have either an illness or an accident, however, the unexpected can happen. Going without health insurance for even a short period of time could put you at financial risk. Short term major medical insurance is a temporary health insurance plan (30 to 185 days) that provides affordable health coverage for you and/or your family.

These plans are designed for you when you are:

  • Between jobs
  • Waiting for your employer group coverage to take effect
  • A recent graduate
  • A temporary or seasonal employee
  • A descendent no longer eligible for your parent's plan
  • A laid off or temporary employee

You may choose a $250, $500, $1,000 or $2,500 deductible, and the length of coverage you need from 30 days to 185 days. This plan permits your use of any doctor or any hospital. It is not a HMO or a PPO. The short term major medical plan is available to individuals able to answer four health questions who are:

  • Between the ages of 15 and 64 years 11 months
  • Dependent children through age 20 (24 if a full time student) as dependent on their parent's plan
  • Foreign residents living in the the US for at least one year with appropriate documentation

Medical Savings Account

Effective February 1, 2001, a self-employed individual in Kentucky can purchase a Medical Savings Accounts (MSA). An MSA allows the self-employed person to set up a tax-free account to pay for medical expenses and to allow for savings. Accounts are established in conjunction with low premium/high deductible health insurance plans. The money you put into an MSA is pre-taxed, and you will never pay tax on money spent for qualified medical expenses and prescriptions.
